RC33 Eighth International Conference on Social Science Methodology Call for Papers

RC33 Eighth International Conference on Social Science Methodology Welcome to RC33`s 8th International Conference on Social Science Methodology.
RC33 is the International Sociological Association`s Research Committee on Logic and Methodology in Sociology. Its conference is the major international forum for current and fundamental issues in social science methodology and since 1984 has attracted scholars from all over the world and from a diverse range of academic fields and disciplines.
The focus of the conference is on innovations and current best practice in all aspects of social science research methodology. It provides an opportunity to reflect on contemporary methods, as applied in a range of settings and disciplinary contexts, to hear about emerging methods, tools, techniques and technologies, and to discover what resources are available to social science researchers and users of research.
The aim of the conference is to disseminate knowledge and promote methodological debate with the goal of contributing to the scientific development of social science research, particularly by building the evidence base to evaluate the efficacy, efficiency and rigour of the methods and techniques of social science research.
We welcome papers on all aspects of social science methodology, including but not restricted to: critiques and analysis of the philosophical paradigms that underpin the logic of social research; issues in the formulation of research questions; the design of social research; methods of collecting data, and analysing them; research technologies; and issues relating social science methodology to research consumers.
The focus of each presentation will be a methodological issue. Papers concerned solely on the application of a technique are not acceptable, but we welcome papers that illustrate a methodological issue or problem within the context of a substantive research study.
The conference is organised into scheduled sessions covering themes proposed and organised by members of the international social science community.

Critical Matter Call for Papers

Critical Matter Critical Matter
Matter everywhere! We breathe, eat and die… Things surround and affect us until it becomes unclear who “we” are and what “we” can become. The question of materiality imposes itself.
Accordingly, materialities and materialisms gain popularity in social and cultural studies. Recently, scholars of diverse disciplines have increasingly stressed the importance of posing questions concerning the social life of things; the materiality of affects, emotions and the psyche; the material preconditions of the production of knowledge, the independent existence of epistemic things; the materiality of signifiers, signs and media, communication and information; the performative production of materiality in the arts and in literature; vitality and materiality of life in the age of biotechnology; the potentiality of bodies beyond anthropocentrism; the materiality of space; new materialist ontology; lastly, Marx-based historical materialism and new materialist approaches to the economy testify their relevancy in times of never-ending crisis and social distortions. These approaches have one thing in common. They no longer refer to matter as a passive carrier of meaning or human manipulation. The world of the material is not considered as a sphere of linear causality and determination; emphasis is rather put on the obstinacy and contingency of matter.
What is interesting in these debates is not so much what they turn away from (linguistic turn) or what they turn to (material turn), but rather which encounters they enable. “Matter” offers a flexible and pulsating point of reference for the concurrence of diverse materialisms, critical theories and radical politics. This encounter of critical materialistic approaches ranging from new to old, from feminist to postcolonial, from Marxist to post-structuralist, from the (social) sciences to the humanities raise questions such as: What forms of collective action emerge from assemblages of humans and non-humans? How considerable is the threat of exclusions, dependences and exploitation within these networks? Has a re-thinking of the classical conception of “reification” become necessary and how can the danger of essentialism be approached? What is critical in matter?
Abstracts for lectures can be handed in regarding the following and adjoined topics as well as the topic of the conference in general. Please indicate the preferred panel.
___Body and Affectivity
Is the affective material (emotions, the unconscious, critical neurosciences) and to what degree is the material affective (drive-nature, symbols, affective work)? What are the consequences of the embodiment of the affects and the psychologization of the body (newer psychopathologies, medicalization, responsibilization, narcissism)?
___Life
In what ways do life sciences contrive life (visualization, synthetical biology, bio- and reproduction technologies) and how does life contrive itself (evolution, élan vital, resilience)? Which borders, exclusions and hierarchies are either produced or questioned by that (human-animal, life-death, mechanical-vital, organic-anorganic, male-female)?
___Ontology and Epistemology
Which challenges are imposed to a (philosophical) understanding of matter by newer academic and scientific approaches (quantum physics, complexity theories)? What does that mean for extremes such as reason-sensual, mind-nature, etc.? How may the independent existence and contingency of the material be theorized and conceptualized without fixating it? What about the materiality of epistemic techniques and dispositives?

Changing Patterns of Migration – Changing Patterns of Social Inequalities? Call for Papers

Changing Patterns of Migration – Changing Patterns of Social Inequalities? Call for Papers
The workshop aims at discussing the transformation of migration and mobility dynamics in Europe from transnational and global perspectives. The collapse of socialist regimes in Eastern and Central Europe and the fall of the Iron Curtain at the end of the 80’s encouraged considerable migration from former socialist to West European countries, which slowly declined in the 90’s. Later, following the eastern enlargement of the European Union in 2004 and 2007, the migration flows from Central and Eastern to Western Europe continuously decreased. Permanent emigration/immigration has been progressively replaced by short-term and circular migration. This workshop addresses the transformation and new quality of migration between Eastern and Western Europe. By bringing together sociologists, social anthropologists, political scientists and economists, the following topics (among others) will be addressed:
1. In which ways do new types of migration/mobility transform patterns of social inequality in sending and receiving countries?
2. How does the relation between the territorial borders and social boundaries change in the course of new migration dynamics?
3. Do new types of migration promote the emergence of new social spaces, such as transnational labor markets, cross-border fields of care and transnational scientific communities? If yes, what kind of social stratifications come into being within these new transnational spaces?
4. In which manner do formal institutional arrangements, such as welfare, migration, care and gender regimes intersect with informal practices of migrants? Under what conditions do these interrelations result in privileging or depriving particular groups?
Insights from current empirical research addressing the following topics (among others) are highly welcome:
• Transformation of territorial borders and social boundaries in Europe,
• Inequality and/of geographic mobility,
• Transnational labour markets,
• Cross-border fields of care services,
• Migration and transformation of welfare,
• Cross-border circulation of talents.

International Congress on Visual Culture 2012: Digitalization Call for Papers

International Congress on Visual Culture 2012: Digitalization The commencement of the digital age along with the rapid development of information technologies in the 21st century has led it to be defined as the age of information, where the boundaries between place and time no longer exist. It has become increasingly difficult to define what McLuhan has coined as the “global village”, a village based on visual culture where cultural structures are founded on visuality, and constructed through differing codes. In other words, despite the fact that images, which are the most important carriers of visual culture, can transcend all kinds of barriers, individuals living in different cultures and societies perceive and understand these images in completely distinctive ways. Furthermore, it is important to ask the question of whether the process of digitalization brings along with it “visuality”, “artificiality”, “loneliness”.
The term visual culture no doubt includes fashion, painting, textile, sculpture, all kinds of architecture, industrial and graphic design, advertising, popular culture, photograph, and mass media tools such as film, and television, as well as other products such as computer games, webpages, and newspaper and magazine design. So how are the messages created in these areas perceived? In terms of visual culture, what are the good and bad aspects of “digitalization”? How is society influenced by the “change”, “transformation” and “conversion” occurring in communication? Do McLuhan’s “technological determinism”, the “hyperreality” and the notion that all images morph into the imaginary of Jean Baudrillard’s “Simulacra and Simulation”, M. Castells concept of “network society” and the now very popular term of “social media” have anything in common? If we look at it more generally, what are the new approaches that have emerged in the components of visual culture – communication, art and design – due to the process of digitalization?
Visualist 2012 (International Congress on Visual Culture: New Approaches in Communication, Arts and Design: Digitalization) will take place from March 7th to March 9th 2012. The Congress will bring together academics and professionals coming from different fields to discuss their differing point of views on these questions related to “Visual Culture” while referring to “digitalization”.

PERFORMING THE WORLD 2012 Call for Papers

PERFORMING THE WORLD 2012 The seventh Performing the World (PTW) conference will be held in New York City, Thursday, October 4 through Sunday October 7, 2012. International, cross-disciplinary, conversational, experiential, and practical-critical, PTW has come over the decade to play an increasingly important role in supporting and expanding “the performance turn” around the world. If you practice and/or study performance as a means of individual, community and world transformation (or want to), PTW is for you.
The theme of the last PTW, held in 2010 and attended by over 500 people from dozens of countries, was, “Can Performance Change the World?” The depth of the challenges facing humanity two short years later have led the conveners of Performing the World to recast the question for the 2012 conference as, “Can Performance Save the World?”
Deadlocked governments, protracted wars, dysfunctional education systems, and a deepening global economic crisis with no apparent solution have become the norm. At the same time, the activity of performance (and playing and pretending and creating…), as an alternative to the cognitive– and/or faith-based “solutions” of traditional ideology, continues to spread both at the grassroots and in the university, with the non-ideological, improvisatory movements struggling to embody this trend. PTW is looking for proposals, be they for panels, workshops, performances, demonstrations, installations, etc., that address this question, “Can performance save the world?” from a multitude of perspectives, including but not limited to:
• Does performance contribute to people seeing/being in the world in new ways?
• Can we perform our way to ending poverty?
• Performance and community building and sustainability
• The interface of theatre performance and performance in daily life
• Performance and learning
• Performance and youth development, in school and out
• Performance and the Elderly
• Performance, play and therapeutics
• The relationship of performance to physical and emotional healing
• Health and the performance of medicine (East and West)
• New model of community health and human rights
• What is creative conversation and how can it take place in polarized (and violent) environments?
• The role of theatre and performance in war and conflict zones
• What is play and its role in human creativity and development?
• The social context of creativity
• When “reasoning” and “argument” fail, what then?
• Performance and the creation of history
• Does knowing get in the way of performing?
• The role of cognition/reflection in performance
• The performance of language and the language of performance
• Performance and organizational culture
• The role of performance in politics and revolution

3RD International Conference on Education & Educational Psychology Call for Papers

3RD International Conference on Education & Educational Psychology I`m profoundly honoured to Chair the 3rd International Conference on Education and Educational Psychology and take pleasure in inviting you—research students, academics, educators and educational psychologists from around the world—to attend the conference. I should never forget the committed team of the ICEEPSY Scientific Committee & Board of Reviewers who are, in the main, working with me to make the 2012 conference another resounding success following the tradition of the previous ICEEPSY conferences.
The International Conference on Education and Educational Psychology 2012 will take place in Istanbul, Turkey, October 10th - 13th, 2012. This conference will not only build on the success of the previous ICEEPSY conferences but will seek to raise the bar in international exchange of ideas, collaborations and cooperation among academics, educators and educational psychologists and other practitioners.
The 2012 conference will provide unrivalled opportunities for participants to rub minds and bounce off ideas with each other. It will seek to facilitate the discussion including the challenges on education and educational psychology internationally providing a forum for scientific debate and constructive interaction in a multi cultural social environment such as Istanbul. The conference will provide a platform for educators, teachers, researchers, research students and practitioners to present their work; to exchange knowledge, ideas and experience and will identify solutions to existing challenges worldwide known in education and educational psychology. Doctoral candidates are also explicitly invited to present and discuss their research ideas and work in progress.
The ICEEPSY 2012 Scientific Committee and Board of Reviewers have expanded the conference themes for 2012 and have provided added features including pre-conference continuous professional development workshops, Poster Presentations, and Special Interest Group (SIG) symposiums. To this end, the ICEEPSY 2012 Scientific Committee and Board of Reviewers welcomes papers from the following and related topics: Special Education, Education and Technology, ICT, Distance Learning, Effective Teaching Practices, Assessment and Evaluation, Quality Assurance and Institutional Effectiveness, Leadership and Collaborative Policy, Adult and Continuing Education, Vocational and Technical Education, Lifelong Learning, Higher Education, Teaching and Learning, Learning Theories, Models of Teaching, Guidance and Counseling Psychology (Educational Psychology), Early Years Education, Intercultural Education, and Equity, Learner diversity and Inclusion.

As with previous conferences, abstracts from the 2012 conference will be published by ICEEPSY and a full text of papers will be provided by Elsevier in the ICEEPSY 2012 Proceedings.
ICEEPSY 2011 conference in Istanbul was a huge success and ICEEPSY 2012 promises to be another high quality event. Istanbul is a special city and one-time European Capital of Culture city with its position as a bridge between Europe and Asia - the Western part of the city is in Europe, and the Eastern is in Asia. The city`s hugely important historic buildings provide visitors with a great lot to see. I hope that the accessibility of the conference venue and its proximity to the city`s major attractions provides additional reason to attend.
I personally look forward to meeting up with colleagues and friends—old and new—in Istanbul in October 10th 2012.
